About Us

Your Police, Our Community!

The Village of North Syracuse Police Department is your full time, community service oriented Police Department.  Established in 1948 the North Syracuse Police Department has continuously evolved to meet the public safety needs of the citizens they serve. The Department is now comprised of 10 full-time and 6 part-time, sworn officers and 2 civilians on staff and is responsible for over 10,000 complaints a year ranging from quality of life issues to major felonies. Today’s North Syracuse Police Department, under the leadership of Chief of Police William J. Becker, employs sworn personnel trained to meet the unique challenges facing law enforcement in the 21st century. In addition to 800 hours of training mandated by state law under the Municipal Police Training Council, North Syracuse Police Officers receive specialized training in anti-terrorism, youth relations, juvenile law, emergency management and much more. This specialized training enhances the abilities and skills that are necessary for Officers to effectively provide professional and quality service to the public it serves.

Executive Order No. 203 titled New York State Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative established June 12, 2020 by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo was enacted and requires any agency in New York State seeking state funding to have a plan in place addressing police reform which is approved by its governing body. The plan must be submitted to the Governor by April of 2021.

Similar to other communities in New York State, Onondaga County has combined with all municipalities within the county, to address a comprehensive plan for reform.  While this collaborative effort creates a baseline for all government entities within Onondaga County with a police agency operating with law enforcement officials, the Executive Order requires that each department develop its own plan for police reform.

Onondaga County Executive J. Ryan McMahon II, City of Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh, and Onondaga County District Attorney William J. Fitzpatrick joined together with helping every town, village and city to enact broad based police reform.

The members of this collaborative include individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds within our community representing the diversity of Onondaga County.
